Planning your marathon debut? Loading up on carbs the day before WILL help, per a new study:

The average finishing time among the students who kept diet logs was 4:26. As you might expect, there was a wide range of times within the group, with the fastest running 3:23 and the slowest running 6:07. There was a similarly broad range in a pre-marathon two-mile run the group, with the fastest running under 11:30 and the slowest just over 19:00. When they did their statistics crunching, the study authors say, the two-mile time explained 73% of the variability in marathon finishing times. In other words, the ones who could run 6:00 miles for two miles were better marathoners than those who couldn't break 9:00 pace for two miles. This is, of course, in line with common sense, and points to how much training and natural ability contribute to running success.
