The text below has been excerpted from Running & Being by Dr. George Sheehan, which spent more than 14 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers List when it was published in 1978, helping to launch the first running boom. Running & Being has been out of print for decades, but Rodale, the parent company of Runner's World , has reissued a 35th Anniversary hardcover edition . This excerpt is from the chapter entitled "Running." Every mile I run is my first. Every hour on the roads a new beginning. Every day I put on my running clothes, I am born again.
