How fat distribution affects running performance

It's well-known that having much of your fat in your abdominal area is worse than having the same amount more evenly distributed. A high concentration of abdominal fat has been linked to increased risk of heart disease and diabetes, and even earlier death. A new study out of France suggests concentrated abdominal fat can also hurt your performance. Researchers gathered 21 young, healthy, normal-weight active women and grouped them by the ratio of their abdominal fat distribution to their lower-body fat distribution. The women then cycled for 45 minutes at 65% of their VO2 max, which is a moderate effort, akin to doing a normal getting-in-the-miles run. Although the two groups had similar levels of fitness, the women with less abdominal fat used stored body fat to a greater extent when exercising than did the women with a higher ratio of abdominal fat to lower body.
