We have a new column, Run the Numbers, that analyzes the lighter side of running-related data. Check it out:

Our first map comes from 1972, that glorious age where men and women would head to the great northern wild and run marathons. That's right, the second-largest marathon in the entire country back in '72 was in Fairbanks, Alaska. The thing is, it only took 585 participants to be the second biggest at that time. The Boston Marathon was still the country's biggest, as it didn't yet face competition from Chicago — and the New York City Marathon was only 187 runners racing around Central Park.
