Think vitamin D and calcium supplements can help prevent fractures? Maybe not, new research finds

Extra vitamin D and calcium may not lower your risk of sustaining a fracture, according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent panel of primary care providers. Because poor bone density results in approximately 1.5 million fractures in the U.S. each year, and nearly half of all older women break a bone sometime in their life, adults are often advised to take vitamin D and calcium supplements. To assess the validity of the recommendation, USPSTF commissioned systematic reviews of the research on the nutrients' benefits for healthy adults—people without osteoporosis or vitamin D or calcium deficiencies.
