STUDY: Do sports drinks actually work? A:

You’d think that by this time, nearly 50 years after Dr. Robert Cade mixed up a sports drink for the heavy-sweating footballers at the University of Florida (a drink that became Gatorade), we would know most that there is to know about such drinks. After all, a recent academic search for articles on sports drinks turned up 16,658 references. The problem is, the researchers decided that 16,508 of them were bunk. Which raises the crucial question: What exactly do we know about sports drinks and their effect on endurance performance? Let’s backpedal momentarily. The Swiss team that published the study in Nutrition Journal acknowledge that “there is a consensus claiming an ergogenic effect” for carbohydrates during exercise.
