The annual rankings of the top marathoners in the world and U.S.

The Running Times Marathoner of the Year rankings honor the finest marathon specialists in the world and in the U.S. These athletes who focus on the marathon tend to have limited racing schedules, meaning that few of them typically factor into our year-end overall rankings. We take into account fast times in our Marathoner of the Year formula, unlike in our other rankings, because time takes on greater significance when athletes race infrequently and match up against each other less often. Due to the strength of the fields at many of the top marathons around the world, which result largely from sizeable appearance fees and payouts for high placings, neither of the 2012 Olympic champions ended up atop our rankings. The London Marathon had the year’s deepest fields for men and women alike, and on the men’s side, the Olympic Marathon only ranked No. 6 in strength of field. Th...
