Gentildonna (Deep Impact ex Donna Blini) becomes first 3yo filly to claim JRA Horse of the Year title

With a win and a second in two starts as a two-year-old, the bay filly kicked off to a good start in her three-year-old campaign, registering her first grade-race victory in a competition against male opponents in the Shinzan Kinen. Though a fever prior to the Tulip Sho affected her performance (fourth) in this G3 event, she bounced back in the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) to claim the first leg of the Triple Crown by 1/2 length. Some had argued that Deep Impact's various offspring had only proven themselves at the G1 level in the mile category, but Gentildonna demonstrated a terrific late charge from behind by covering the last three furlongs in 34.2 seconds to a five-length record-breaking victory in the 2,400-meter race. This was faster than the winning time of the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) held at the same racecourse and over the same distance a week later.
