MORNING READ: Even former #BostonMarathon winners get out of shape and must start from scratch

This being 2013, a fifth-year anniversary of 1968 when I won the Boston Marathon, it’s time for me to again make the journey from Hopkinton to Boston. It could be ugly. Last year, for reasons I haven’t figured out, my running never jelled. I ran consistently through the year and attempted to get into “racing shape,” but those efforts failed. By the time of my 50th Manchester road race on Thanksgiving Day, a day when I normally race to the death, I just didn’t have it. So I elected to enjoy a slow, social run with my wife, kids, and other friends. Good choice, sure, I realize that. But you know what else is true? Once a competitor, always a competitor. Even deep into the seventh decade of my life, a time when a man ought to know better, I find it difficult to stand on a starting line without a fire in the belly. Something within me wants to race .
