Study: The Cardiac Effects of Yoga

Given yoga's mix of strengthening, flexibility, movement, and breathing exercises, you'd be right to think it affects many of the body's systems. In terms of cardiac effects, a single yoga session produces effects similar to doing isometric strengthening exercises, according to a study published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine . Researchers did a battery of measurements, such as blood pressure and heart rate, before and while 36 people did a hatha yoga session. The session consisted of 23 poses; as a hatha yoga session, the emphasis was on performing one pose at a time, rather than moving rapidy from one pose to the next. The participants' blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output increased significantly during the session, especially when they did standing poses.
