Q: How can I breathe to beat side stitches? A:

Hi my name is Amber, and I was wondering if you could give me some tips on running. Whenever I run I have mild epigastric pain. I think it’s how I am breathing. Can you give me some tips to stop this? Dear Amber- Pain in the abdominal region is a common complaint among runners. Please remember that it is always best to check with your physician first anytime you experience pain or discomfort, especially when it is a re-occurring pain, to rule out any underlying health conditions. Abdominal pain while running is generally referred to as a "side stitch." While the cause of a side stitch is not known, there are several theories as to their origin. The predominant thought is that side stitches are the result of a muscle spasm of the diaphragm and/or it's supporting ligaments. The diaphragm muscle is responsible for assisting breathing.
