A Twitter friend pointed out an interesting study that was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Biomechanics over the summer. Researchers at the University of North Carolina assembled two groups of runners: 22 who wore "traditional shoes" and 35 who wore "minimalist shoes," all of whom had at least six months of regular running in their current footwear. They asked each runner a simple question: "Are you a forefoot striker or a rearfoot striker?" Then they put them on a high-tech treadmill for a reality-check at the end of a five-minute run at the pace of their choice. The results? Among the "traditional" group, 20 of 22 claimed to be rearfoot strikers; in fact, they were all rearfoot strikers.
