A Truce with Age and Arthritis: By MICAH WARD, Fernandina Beach, FL I am not going to surrender but I am will...

By MICAH WARD, Fernandina Beach, FL I am not going to surrender but I am willing to have peace talks. Who is the enemy? It is old age and arthritis. Ok, I’m not all that old, I’m only 60. But I do have arthritis in both knees, both hips and lower back. And it really isn’t an issue as long as I stay under 10 miles and keep speed work to an absolute minimum. But where’s the fun in that? I want to run longer than 10 miles and I would like to be at least half fast. Well, enough with the whining. Let me provide a little background. I began running in 1977 and kept up a steady diet of 5K to half marathon races until my first marathon in 2007. Yeah, I waited a long time before dipping my toes into that water. That first marathon was followed by two more plus a 50K trail race then 36 miles and 32 miles at timed events. Of course the next step in my plan was to run several 50 mile ...
