AFTERNOON READ: How green is your favorite race?

Photo Reuters/Dominick Reuter When the Chronotrack B-tag timing system was introduced in 2009, it was heralded as a huge innovation in race timing technology. No longer would fatigued runners be queued up for long stretches waiting for volunteers to clip bulky timing chips off their feet, risking a penalty if their device went missing. Now, an almost imperceptible radio frequency tag was adhered to the back of the participant’s disposable racing bib, registering their start and finish without a hassle. As long as no one forgot their bib at the start line, the technological advance seemed flawless. Keith Peters, executive director at the Council for Responsible Sport , saw it another way.
