By Scott Douglas The use of performance-enhancing drugs has spread from the world of elite sport to the general population and should be considered a public health issue, experts have told an anti-doping conference in Sweden. As Reuters reports , delegates made the remarks at a conference organized by the Arne Ljungqvist Foundation; Ljungqvist is chairman of the International Olympic Committee medical commission. "If we believe that around 3 percent of high school boys in the U.S. are taking a steroid or growth hormone, then that's a public health issue," Dr. Timothy Armstrong of the World Health Organization told the conference. "Elite sport plays an obvious role," Ljungqvist said. "They are the role models of youngsters and if they are drug takers, that is not the right role model for the coming society."
