One night last week one of my daughters (now 5th graders) was struggling with her math homework. They may be twins but they could not be more different, where one struggles, another glides, where one is sensitive, the other is Teflon – it’s uncanny. Maybe they were designed just that way, so that one will always be slightly stronger in different areas or in different moments, making the sum of two sisters an unquantifiable blessing. I sat with Struggling Sister as she worked her multiplication facts on her class website. This was a review of things she learned several years ago, but her lack of fluidity and confidence continues to dog her. She pauses each time, to consider the equation (and to allow time to doubt and diminish herself). Ugh, I suck at math! I never remember this one. I am not good at this one.
