By Peter Gambaccini Photo by Victah Sailer On Tuesday night as the sky was beginning to darken at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, head men’s and women’s cross country coach Steve Spence, the 1991 IAAF World Championships marathon bronze medalist, completed a mile on the track in 4:52.9. It was the 37th year in a row that Spence, who began running cross country as a ninth grader in 1976, had broken 5:00 for the mile. "I had to get it done in 2012," explains 1992 Olympian Spence, who performed the task to “provide some entertainment" at his cross country team’s preseason camp, with students acting as official timers and announcers and others “sitting around the track and making fun at me," laughs Spence.
