Running Home: 50 Years Later, Little Has Changed

Almost 1-mile completed. I’m on vacation at my brother's cottage near Long Island Sound; it’s less than a mile from the home where I grew up. I have run the nearby roads so often--for 50-plus years--that I recognize every crack in the asphalt. This one, a sort of “Y” on its side, means that I am approaching the 1-mile mark. It’s just 20 or 30 yards ahead. The crack with the grass in the middle is just past the 3-mile mark. If I subtract 10 seconds from my time there, that’s close enough. The grass changes to a double crack with seashells at the 5.5-mile mark. These cracks are located just a few yards from the most sparkling beach you can imagine. When I hit this point, I’ve got just a half-mile to go. Grass in the asphalt: just past 3 miles. Then, finished with my 6-miler, I can jump into the chilly waters, just as I have done for 50 summers and more. I can’t stay in long;...
