Ultrarunner Charlie Engle Out of Prison
By Scott Douglas Ultrarunner Charlie Engle, one of the first three people on record as having run across the Sahara Desert, has been released from prison to live in a halfway house in Greensboro, N.C. In 2010, Engle was found guilty in federal court on 12 counts of mortgage fraud. Engle says he'll seek a new trial; his attorney has accused the federal government of withholding evidence. His running may have been his undoing. Engle's run across the Sahara was the subject of a film produced by Matt Damon. An IRS agent who happens to be a runner was curious how Engle funded the Sahara run and other adventures, pulled Engle's file and discovered the fradulent mortgage applications. Engle is a former drug addict whose pre-prison story was the subject of a Runner's World article in 2008 .
