I was in Anchorage for the marathon a few years ago. The clock radio in my hotel room was off by an hour and I ended up missing the shuttle to the start. Grabbed a cab and managed to go to the start of the half marathon instead of the full, but by the time I realized it, my cab was gone. A cop kindly called another for me and as I was waiting another runner who was also in the wrong place joined me. After waiting impatiently for 15 minutes we took off across town in the second cab. As we were getting close to the marathon starting area I realized I didn't have quite enough money for the fare, and my new friend had no money at all, but the driver was cool about it and didn't dump us beside the road. We hopped out, jogged to gear check, jogged to the starting corral, and the gun immediately went off. More than a little stressful, but it could have been a lot worse...
