Exercise May Worsen Heart Risk Markers

By Meghan G. Loftus Don't be alarmed: About 90 percent of the subjects analyzed, in a review of data from six exercise studies, did not experience negative effects. More likely than not, your running habit is only improving your health. That said, the review, published in the journal PLoS One , found that about 10 percent of the 1,687 people involved in the studies fared worse in at least one heart-disease-related marker after beginning to exercise, and about seven percent fared worse in two or more markers. (The review compared blood pressure measurements as well as levels of HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin.) The researchers behind the review admit they don't understand why this is happening or how to determine which individuals exercise may harm.
