There's a neat new paper from researchers at the University of Kentucky, just published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise , that looks at the role of exercise as a "zeitgeber." What's a zeitgeber, you ask? It's basically a time cue -- something that tells your body what time it is and synchronizes your body's internal clocks. The strongest and most familiar zeitgeber is light (or, more specifically, light-dark cycles), but there are several other ones, like meal timing -- and, it turns out, exercise. Most of the cells in your body have circadian clock genes that make their function wax and wane with a period of about a day. The clocks aren't perfect, though, so they're constantly being resynchronized by the central timekeeper (in your hypothalamus) and by external cues.
