This is the second part of a two-part interview with Alberto Salazar, once America’s top distance star and now coach to several of American’s best runners through the Nike-sponsored Oregon Project. In part one , Salazar talked about his heart health, his memories of the 1982 “Duel in the Sun” Boston Marathon race with Dick Beardsley, and his new book, 14 Minutes . Here, he talks about his top U.S. runners—Dathan Ritzenhein and Galen Rupp—Nike’s Jerry Schumacher training group, and the biggest mistake he made in his own running career. In January, Dathan Ritzenhein finished fourth in the Marathon Trials after a relatively brief buildup after a long injury period. I’m sure that was a disappointment to both of you.
