By Meghan G. Loftus More bad news for frequent sitters: A new study from the Archives of Internal Medicine has found a connection between hours spent seated and all-cause mortality. Australian researchers found that, compared to people who sat for less than four hours per day, those who sat for 11 hours or more had a 40 percent higher risk of all-cause mortality. (Sitting between 4 and 8 hours carried a 2% higher risk, and between 8 and 11 hours carried a 15% higher risk.) The amount of physical activity subjects got did not affect the results, so if you typically run for an hour and spend the rest of your day on your behind, you may want to try to make some changes. Some ideas: At the office: Instead of emailing or calling the coworker that works down the hall, drop by when you need to discuss something.
