Lent is one of the hardest seasons for me—a stretch of 40 days to examine, evaluate and accept the pruning that ultimately leads to growth. When I say hardest, I mean it in the best way; the way hills are hardest, or .2 is hardest. The kind of difficult you seek on purpose, knowing it is for your good. Just like the tree in my front yard, which until just last week looked like a school picture with a very bad haircut, sometimes we are clipped way back at the appropriate times in order to blossom later at the appropriate time. Lent always snips off the things that need to go. It's uncomfortable, to say the least. But it's a lot less so when we can endure the refinement with people who also want to grow.
